When you buy a broken Lionel 675 at a train show for $25, that doesn't run, has a motor that's caked in dirt and rust everywhere, and get it running by the end of the night, you feel accomplished!

Defeating The Grade
Sandpatch and Southern heavy Hudson number 165 slowly drags her train from the Lime Hollow Tunnel on a warm summer day in 1934. Usually the “Sandpatch Flyer” runs on the Streets Run line, but due to the wreck of a freight train, the 165 was diverted to the Lime Hollow grade. This section of the line is the steepest on the Pittsburgh division, measuring out at 3.5%.

Usually this piece of trackage is reserved for Southbound and Eastbound freight trains, helped by Bankers stationed on the Nadine Helper Pocket.

Engine 165 was the last of 5 Hudsons rebuilt from smaller Pacifics in 1924 to help combat the swelling passenger market for the Scenic line that the Sandpatch and Southern was built upon, and to service the resorts that are along the line. The Sandpatch Flyer runs from the Pittsburgh “ Schenley” Station, all the way over the line to its Southern terminus of Covington, Va. and then over the C&O to White Sulfur Springs.

PGH16
One of the rather unusual locomotives on the Sandpatch and Southern was a lone 4-6-4t, built by D-TECo in the spring of 1913. The letters PGH are included in the number of the engine because the locomotive spent its entire career on the Sandpatch and Southern Pittsburgh suburb line. The “Flying Wheel” herald was plastered all over the tanks and cab of the engine, and most of the time the 16 had a name plate “Fast Flying Pittsburgher”, before she was demoted to branch line passenger service, and a 4-6-2 took her place.

Included in this vintage 1921 photograph is a coach which was semi-permanently attached to the locomotive (it was removed only for maintenance). The coach was built with a booster truck to help this high stepping beast to start on some of the steeper grades, like the Lime Hollow Tunnels.

Down At The Station
An early Western Maryland 4-6-2 simmers in the station as her Passengers board. It is Unknown to the individual who colorized this picture (Me) where the train was going, though judging by the direction of the train, Either Elkins or Hagerstown.

These light Pacifics were no match for the grades on the Connelsville extension, built in 1911, so in 1912 these handsome locomotives where overshadowed by heavier pacifics numbered in the 200 series.

Slowly, these engines were disused, and eventually sold to the Seaboard.

Unfortunately, I can't afford that haha.

I'm going to work on a 681 Turbine first, then a 736.
